Increasing Influenza Vaccination Among Nursing Home Personnel

It’s critical for healthcare personnel in long-term care settings to get the influenza (flu) vaccine. Influenza is a serious health threat, especially for vulnerable populations like older adults and people living with long-term disabilities.

Healthcare providers in nursing homes often have direct or indirect contact with older adults, persons with disabilities and persons with chronic medical conditions receiving care. Studies show that during a confirmed influenza outbreak in a long-term care facility, up to one in three residents and one in four staff develop an influenza-like illness. Preventing influenza among care providers can help reduce the spread of influenza in resident populations.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) National Vaccine Program Office (NVPO) developed a toolkit to help long-term care employers and administrators promote influenza vaccination among their workforce and to help anyone working in long-term care facilities understand the importance of influenza vaccination for employees.
