Identifying Barriers to Adult Vaccinations

Vaccines are widely recognized as safe, clinically effective, cost-effective and an integral part of public health policy in the United States. However, vaccination rates are below targeted levels, particularly for vaccines recommended for older adults. The Alliance for Aging Research studied the reasons why adult vaccines are underutilized. They published a white paper that details the study findings and policy recommendations that may lead to increased vaccination rates.

The report provides context by reviewing vaccination levels, trends, incidence rates and relevant health insurance coverage policies. The analysis identifies obstacles that reduce the likelihood that older adults will get different vaccines. It measures the extent to which personal finances, vaccine awareness and demographic factors contribute to older adults not getting the immunizations needed. The report suggests policy recommendations to reduce barriers and mitigate their effect on vaccination rates among older adults in the US.
