African Americans and Hispanics at Higher Risk for Stroke Death

atom Alliance is working to reduce health disparities by supporting Million Hearts ®, a national initiative to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes by 2017.

Certain populations are at higher risk for heart disease and stroke. African Americans are 40 percent more likely to have high blood pressure than non-Hispanic whites, and African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to die from a stroke. Hispanic men who have high blood pressure are less likely to take medication for the condition. Million Hearts® emphasizes prevention of heart disease and stroke by improving on the ABCS:

  • Aspirin when appropriate,
  • Blood pressure control,
  • Cholesterol management, and
  • Smoking cessation.

atom Alliance is helping providers and practices improve health outcomes in underserved communities. By encouraging the use of health IT such as clinical decision support tools, as well as team-based care and population health analytics, we help providers to better understand patient health status, coordinate care and ultimately improve the quality of health.
